Loss of Polo Gold Made Up for by Epic Grab for Other Medals, Genitals

Unfortunately, it looks like Hungary’s recent dominance of Olympic water polo has come to an end, with hopes for a fourth consecutive gold dashed in the quarterfinals. But on the bright side, the country’s other Olympic contenders are doing the country very proud, having scooped up enough medals in London to put us near the top of the medals-per-capita rankings. Meanwhile, the nation’s reputation as the breeder of the most fearsome water polo players looks set to survive the setback, thanks to this widely-read feature in the New York Times on the seamier side of what Hungarians call vízilabda:

Terry Schroeder, the coach of the United States men’s team, which lost to Croatia, 8-2, in a quarterfinal Wednesday night, shook his head as he thought back to his own playing days. “When I was playing, there was a Hungarian guy and his method of guarding was to reach between my legs and grab me and pull me down,” Schroeder said. “He’d be smiling and have his other hand up in the air, but for me it was a battle just to survive.”

Go team!

And here is what people were saying back before we forced readers to use Facebook to comment. Weren't those the days?
  1. Tricky says:

74% of the Hungarian water polo players are gay. As being homo is still seen as a freak thing in Hungary, gays join sport teams to touch other men’s genitals. Or they become priests and do other nasty stuff with innocent kids. I swear to you, it’s a sick nation.
