Hungarian Discus Throwers Win First Olympic Golds for Doping

Zoltan Kovago

The opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics won’t be held until tomorrow, but team Hungary has already made a splash, with reports that two of its hopefuls won’t be competing due to doping violations.

The Friday before last, it was revealed that the Hungarian Olympic Committee had omitted Róbert Fazekas – who was disqualified from the 2004 Olympics after winning a gold medal – from its roster of participants.

Now we hear that his fellow diszkoszvető Zoltán Kővágó (left) has been banned from the 2012 games by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, an international body.

The banning of the two means that number of athletes being sent by Hungary to London has dropped from 159 to 157, and is likely to rekindle memories of the Dick Pound Annus urine mystery, as if anyone could forget.

And here is what people were saying back before we forced readers to use Facebook to comment. Weren't those the days?
  1. Koermendi says:

Thank you for the portmanteau “Dick Pound Annus”. One too many “n”s, but otherwise perfect.
