Time Runs Out for Time Out Budapest

I’ve just been forwarded an email in which Time Out Budapest editor Tom Popper says he and editor-at-large Peterjon Cresswell have resigned, apparently over money issues, and which suggests that the mag may not make it out next month. If it is true that time has run out for Time Out here in Budapest (I haven’t been able to confirm it) I wouldn’t be greatly surprised; there seems to be a unwritten rule in Budapest that second-language publications are either of high quality, or are money-makers. And under the direction of the relentlessly energetic and upbeat Popper, the quality hasn’t just been high, but high enough that I always felt downright ashamed reading it. Either way, hats off to Tom and the gang for keeping it so classy for so long. Respect.

And here is what people were saying back before we forced readers to use Facebook to comment. Weren't those the days?
  1. Budapester says:

One of the best reads…..sorry to hear the news. Stay Classy Time Out.

  2. John says:

Hope it’s not true. Not only does it surpass any local publication I’ve seen, it’s one of the better Time Out publications.

Hopefully things can turn around and TimeOut survives.

That being said, I used to be a (maybe thee sole) paying subscriber but I encountered 2 problems that lead to the demise of the subscription.

      1. Some months I wouldn’t receive my copy. When I contacted the published (this is when it was Est Media Group) they send a correspondence, they would only send the missing issue with the next month’s.

      2. When my subscription ran out I repeatedly contacted the publish (new owner of D-E-G Lapkiadó Kft.) about renewing but I never received any reply back.

I even spent 10 minutes searching the interwebz for D-E-G Lapkiadó Kft.’s phone number, but couldn’t find anything online so I gace up.

I’m positive they make the majority of their money via advertisements, but still nerves me they wouldn’t care about a paying subscriber.

    • raverpoke says:

sorry john…this should have been a reply to the thread, not your comment in particular.

  3. Palánta says:

As a former (founding) staffer of the Budapest Sun, I always feel a twinge when I read about English-language media kicking the bucket.
