In a welcome break from the dreary standard Hungarian Jewish cemetery policy investigation story involving racist assholes or clueless teens knocking over tombstones or otherwise vandalizing the hallowed final resting places of local Jews, law enforcement officials last week launched a probe into the Budapest Alliance of Jewish Communities (BZSH) on suspicion of embezzlement and false bookkeeping after evidence came to light that one of the organization’s cemeteries has kept funerals off the books in order to avoid paying taxes.
The case broke after a family discovered that a senior family member’s funeral, which had been paid for in advance of her death, was never entered into organization’s books. As a result of the investigation, the director of the Kozma utca cemetery was quietly let go just a month before his planned retirement. So all in all a pretty ugly scene, though at least no one has accused them of hiring fake priests. [index.hu]
