According to index.hu, police are now investigating people held responsible for the deadly stampede at West Balkán on suspicion of “causing a mass disaster.” Apparently the upgrade from simple tragedy is because it turned out that in addition to the three young women who died, at least fourteen other people were injured. And that’s just the start.
According to various sources we’ve heard from, bars and clubs around town are now being very careful about not running afoul of safety regulations. In some cases, people are being forced to wait to enter places that turn out to be near-empty. And the crackdown – or fears of a crackdown – aren’t limited to issues of occupancy; over at Szimpla, we were told that the kitchen “never existed.” Bummer.

Not quite sure what you mean by “The kitchen never existed” at Szimpla. Does that mean they were supposed to have a kitchen? A lttle clarification please.
A little over a week ago, some friends of mine went upstairs to buy food, and when the kitchen was closed, they asked the bartender why it wasn’t open. The answer they received was “it never existed”, even though they ate there a week earlier. My guess is they didn’t have the proper permits for it while it operated.
@Zoltan. Thanks for the reply. I can tell you that a friend of mine had to report for “training” at a well known establishment last week due to an impending health & safety inspection. He pointed out to the “management” that there was in fact no fire extinguisher in the kitchen and perhaps it might it be prudent to install one. I’ll leave to your imagination the reply he received.
I’ve heard that even the police have been checking the width of entrances and exits in the last week.
@PiP. Did you manage to get some of those details for licenses? Be interesting to know who can do what. @ Zoltan. Disappearing Kitchens. Thats novel. “Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of The Disappearing Kitchen”.
We have the same sort of deal here in Canada-toronto.
Some shady places operate with resturant lic’s instead of club as its easier to get and requires less work. Compacity is much less but so is the need for washrooms and fire exits etc..
they usually get shut down very quickly, i would say max 3 months.
Here in Toronto, every club, has to have a menu available, they are not posted but if you ask for it they have to be able to provide one and the food as well.
