I fear that the passing of a great Hungarian lady is imminent:
“Zsa Zsa Gabor receives last rites”:

She goes SO far back into our history (she’s 93); she was also our Miss Hungary for 1936! Her main importance to Hungarians is that for decades she represented our people to a world who often knew no other Hungarian by name. Even today it would be hard for millions to name another Hungarian besides her. In light of this her persona and antics, both on screen and off, took on a special and sometimes embarrassing import, all of which was eagerly picked up by the press. Add to this the fact that she loved reminding everybody all the time that she was Hungarian! She projected glamour and wealth throughout her career, two qualities the world sure knows how to worship. I suppose we could have been world represented by a less likeable person, but the fates spared us that.
I pray for her, the woman who for over 70 years has been our unofficial ambassador. If she pulls through, her birthday is Feb 6 (1917), and I can see doing a bio and film tribute to her then. (Her film and TV work is all over youtube). If not, then upon that sad occasion I stand ready to produce an article about her anytime. We won’t be forgetting her around here either way.

The perfect thread to ask you that question we discussed on politics.hu
I did not see the recent movie “Letters to Juliet” but read a movie review (that’s why I did not see it) and copied some info for you off the Internet:
“When a young American (Amanda Seyfried) travels to the city of Verona, home of the star-crossed lover Juliet Capulet of Romeo and Juliet fame, she joins a group of volunteers who respond to letters to Juliet seeking advice about love. After answering one letter dated 1951, she inspires its author (Vanessa Redgrave) to travel to Italy in search of her long-lost love”
About 6 years ago in BP, I was complaining to friends that I only understand “trash” on Hungarian TV and when the news or anything serious comes on, I don’t understand what they are talking about.
So they found some old Hungarian movie – must have been made 40 years ago. The lead’s real name was “Eva” and she was driving around Italy in a yellow convertible with some kids (grand children?) looking for her lost love from her youth. The man’s name may have been “Lorenzo” but she and the kids found a whole lot of men named Lorenzo before they found the right one – happy ending etc. The good news was that I understood every word of the movie so I guess newscasters and politicians simply talk too fast (except for Morvai, who I do understand but that’s another story)
So – do you know the movie I am referring to and if you do, the synopsis and the “Letters to Juliet” sounds very similar.
Re Zsazsa – There was a TV show many years ago called “Green Acres” with Zsazsa’s sister Eva Gabor. Have you heard of it?
Hi Olga,
My friends just slay me around here with some of this stuff and I love it! I believe the movie is “Alfa Romeó és Júlia”(1969) with Éva Ruttkai. You can even buy the poster and the DVD on Amazon.
I have seen the Zsa Zsa show “Green Acres”. Old shows live forever on cable and such.
@ Farkas Laszlo
That’s it! – Eva Rutkai. Thanks
I was thinking the American movie “stole” the idea. Sounds like the same story to me – looking for an old flame in Italy – Maybe I should actually watch the American movie before I say “stole” but the movie sounds nauseatingly corny. At least with Eva Rutkai, I was trying to to practice understanding the Hungarian language in the media as opposed to just talking Hungarian to my parents. – I will look at the poster on Amazon, thanks
About Green Acres and Eva Gabor – I always wanted to be a “farmer” but only to the extent that she was portraying a farmer on the show – including my wanting a pet pig. I believe Eva died a few years ago.
My thoughts are with Zsazsa but I don’t know much about her.
Hi Olga,
That was a very different time in the Hungarian cinema, in 1969. There was always a lot of tension in the background between a regime that wanted total ideological control, versus artists who either didn’t like to toe the line, or were always ready to test the limits. The most innocent things often took on a big meaning, sometimes picked up by the censors, other times by the audience.
Take this Julia story for instance. A woman driving around Italy looking for an old flame. The average Hungarian could not do that back then! Travel to non-communist countries on non-government business was very restricted, allowed only to the elderly or to those who agreed to leave a spouse and children behind. Also many Hungarians wouldn’t have had the leisure, so the film was showing something quite provocative. The people felt like they were being held prisoner by the regime, and no doubt many wanted to trade places with “Julia”. Few Hungarians owned cars then, and the idea of tooling around Italy in an AR must have seemd like an unattainable dream.
About Zsa Zsa. Although I don’t I know her personally, I can’t help suspect that she had gotten her real persona mixed up with her screen personality somewhere along the way. A long time ago, she became like her screen characterisations, and then the screenplays were written for her personality. By the time “Green Acres” was made, she was a caricature of herself. This actually works for some stars. Worked for her!
@ Farkas Laszlo
Thanks for the information about films and the restrictions during the communist era.
About Zsazsa – last night on MSNBC’ HLN – The JOy Behar Show, Zsaza’s husband was interviewed and old film clips were shown – (in case you are interested and it can be viewed on the Internet) – I did not get a chance to watch it, but saw about 1 minute of it.
BTW, Green Acres had Eva Gabor as the star – I think Eva died a few year ago
Both women were quite astute – not much talent but they were “personalities” and yes, they were caricatures – they were also about 60 years ahead of their time.
Now there is a slight twist to their MOs and it’s called “Reality TV” – I have never watched a reality TV show, but I know they are all about people who have no talent and the “stars” have huge followers both in the States and Canada. Awful stuff.
