Who Wears the Pants in the Home of Hungary’s World-Record Slipper Maker?

We probably don’t even need to tell you that the picture above contains what local media reports are claiming is the world’s largest slipper, currently under construction down in Szeged. But what might come as news to you is that in not only Hungarian but at least one other language in the region (Czech), the word “slipper” is used to denote a henpecked husband or someone who is (cover your ears, kiddies) “pussy-whipped.”

It’s true: what the Czechs call such poor wretches pod pantoflem – “under the slipper” – Hungarians just dismiss them as a papucs férj, or “slipper husband.” And just look at shoemaker Tibor Sallay and tell us your first reaction isn’t to tell him to stop standing around and get back to work and then go to the ABC and fetch some bon-bons and skedaddle because the girls are coming over for canasta at seven. Better get cracking, Tibi! [blikk.hu]
