We begin this holiday-shortened week’s coverage with a rather gruesome follow-up to our report last week on the epic suicide fail in Böhönye. At around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night Budapest police were called in to deal with a man who had scaled the Szabadság Híd, one of the most popular places in town for people to kill themselves, or at least to prepare to kill themselves and then change their minds at the last moment. Well, as the picture to the left indicates, the man in question doesn’t seem to have been ambivalent. After dousing himself with some kind of flammable liquid, he set fire to himself and then jumped off the pylon, landing on the walkway below. No arguing with that. [index.hu]

@Fidel: Well, death porn is hardly a Hungarian
invention or obsession. Look at the front page of
any big UK tabloid and you’ll see way more death,
dismemberment and general mayhem than in the local
tabs here. Still, I have to say I’d draw the line at
embedding that second video, which is just too much.

These stupid climbers cost a lot of money. Police, Fire Dept., Paramedics, closing the bridge, wasting everyone’s time.
Luckily there’s a quick and inexpensive solution: snipers. One bullet and the show is over. Put up a warning sign in all civilized languages (English and Hungarian), so only idiots will climb up. If they do, call 911sniper. I’ll do it for free as a service to the good people of Budapest.
