District V Mayor Defies Cynics by Completing New “Budapest Broadway” Project On Time. Oh, Brother.

A couple of weeks ago our sister site Caboodle.hu had a cheery feature about how the mayor of Budapest’s District V was boasting that work on the so-called “new main street” of the district was about to be wrapped up ahead of schedule. Which leads to the question, what the fuck was the schedule? Really! We snapped the shot up top of a section of Petőfi Sándor utca in July of last year, because by then the work seemed to have being gone on long enough that we wanted to get a photographic record of how long it would take. Below that is one from last week taken from roughly the same angle. But not exactly from the same angle, because if we tried to do that we would have fallen into the giant gaping hole that is still there (bottom). Honestly, it’s like these politicians have no shame.

I guess to an average Hungarian eye, what you can see on these photos of the “Budapest Broadway” are practically the same as one can see by walking up or down Broadway in New York City, NY. Wow….

BTW, if there is an uglier capital city in the world than Budapest is today, I am not aware of it.

  2. Zoltan says:

Before people get drawn into an argument, just know that “Hugica” is the same person who has also used these aliases in the past:

    Advice Man
    Bela
    D
    Donizelli
    Expat Hun
    Fantron
    Frankoferto
    Filmic
    Jorge
    Karman
    Gyuszi G.
    Kocsog
    Nyalasi
    Stunko
    Violet
    Tanczer P

  3. Hugica says:

Zoltan or whatever your real name is, you seem to have a serious personality crisis, it seems. R U arging with all these people — wow!!! Anyhow, I don’t see any argument here, unless all of you can tell us for sure that the three photos above could have been taken on that other Broadway. You know…. the one in New York City, USA.

You have been there, haven’t you? Pls tell us all the similarities between the NY Broadway and the BP 5th district Brodway, and why wouldn’t you?

  4. Gabor says:

    Hugica – you haven’t got a clue.
    Do you own a passport?
Have you ever crossed the border?

  5. C'est Moi says:

Gabor – Do you really want this turd to have one? He is best ignore and forgotten.

  6. C'est Moi says:

On to more important things. WTF, 9+ months to complete a few km of road and you know its going to be falling apart in a year or so. Don’t believe me, walk up Kiraly utca sometime.

  7. Stretch Armstrong says:

Another disaster area is the bicycle track/footpath
on the upper rakpart between Batthyany ter and
Erzsebeth hid. Almost a year ago they completed the
work on the tram lines and since then nothing at all
(zero) has been done to resurface and landscape the
adjacent pathway. All along the surface is a really
dangerous patchwork of filled-in holes and ugly
plastic ribbon “barriers” go from tree to tree along
the length. Looks like it’s going to stay that way,
after such a length of time.

  8. Horvath Akos says:

I wouldn’t be so negative about it. Oktober 6
utca’s atmosphere has totally changed. Hopefully
some more outside bars and restaurants will now open
    up along this stretch.

Phase 2 of District V’s streets project is also
interesting – the total renovation of Ferenciek
Tere, to open it up totally like Vörösmarty Ter as
well as the rejuvenation of Belgrad Rakpart, one of
the city’s best, but most-underused locations.

  9. Erik says:

@Akos: Where did you see the plans for Ferenciek tere? Is the idea that they’d close over the road as it dips down into the tunnel area leading to Petőfi Sándor u.? I can’t really picture it… I also never really understood what they expect regarding car traffic along the route; it was always pretty busy when it was several lanes – won’t it be even busier now that it’s mostly just one?

  10. Horvath Akos says:

I can’t find it unfortunately at the moment, but I
    think it was on http://www.belvaros-lipotvaros.hu
    somewhere.

Yes, they’re proposing to pedestrianise the entire
Ferenciek Tere and close up the current traffic
underpass. Traffic will apparently be redirected
somehow, with Marcius 15 Ter and Iranyi utca bearing
    the brunt.

  11. C'est Moi says:

“I wouldn’t be so negative about it” Akos, I think you have my point wrong, I have no car so I actually like the project. The problem is the planning and administration of funds is what I find so appalling. Where is the EU oversight for its funds. Fucking pathetic it too this long to create something which in a market economy could have been done in a month or 2. How about some real contract bidding? Until this changes, nothing in Hungary really is going to get better.

  12. will G says:

Really Hugica? Really guy? please tell me you’re not
comparing that complete clusterfuck to the NYC
Broadway. Seriously, please please please don’t
even go there, there is no, absolutely no comparison
to the two. The differences are endless, so really
guy, just please don’t go there.

  13. Horvath Akos says:

@erik, this has a lot of the information about re-
directed traffic and various other plans for
District V, which are likely to happen over the
    coming years.

  14. "MasterBlast" Jackson says:

    Hugica, how dare you! 8)

  15. "Squeeze Me" Jackson says:

Gabor: You don’t ever really “own” a passport, you simply are given the legal ability to “use” it. Just as the car you use, the house you live in and the air you breath. It’s the way governments hold onto your nuts. What’s going on with “Zoltan”? Always so angered…

  16. Horvath Akos says:

I can’t believe that that much-despised scamstaurant, Galaxia Etterem, Becsi utca 3 is still going! Now the sign has been mostly changed to just ‘Restaurant’ but everything else seems the same. 4000 ft. for a Soproni.
