First Stork Sighted in Hungary, Meaning End of Dreadful Winter is Finally Here

stork-of-spring.jpgSightings have come in from Tüskevár of the first stork in Hungary, which apparently is not Charlie, Hungary’s other claimant to the first stork of spring throne, as well as the soon to be regular “first pelican of winter” sighting. In 2008 the stork returned on February 13th, and last year on February 22nd, although it took a bit longer this year. As local birdwatcher Gábor Vasuta said, the arrival of the stork is a signal that the end of winter has arrived, and that spring has begun, meaning we’ll now know to keep our eyes out for that other welcome first sighting of the spring.
