A year ago local beer Soproni released a commercial based off an epically cheesy Molson ad. This time, however, it appears the two breweries released essentially the same ad at basically the same time (see for yourself and cringe), thus raising the question of if one keeps trying to make overly patriotic beer commercials, do they all lead to the same idea, and also who the hell consumes either Soproni or Molson by choice?

This is garden variety beer advertising. Canadian was (maybe still is) largest brand in Canada. Those of us in advertising know the concept called ‘borrowed interest’ where you try to link your brand to something of perceived worth, value or interest even though your brand has nothing to do with it. In Canada, I can assure you that Molson spent a lot of money testing this commercial. As the largest brand, they will be looking for awareness and will be trying to create a ‘brand badge’. The Molson spot would have worked much better as a spot for Tourism Canada, just as the Soproni ad would work for tourism here, even though it looks dated. Canadian tries to link itself to what it means to be Canadian just as the Soproni is trying to define itself as what it means to be Hungarian. Hmmm. And I thought that was Dreher.
Hicks, Mr. Dreher was a Swab brewer who came to Budapest about 150 (?) years ago – anyway both Soproni and Dreher belong to some “Global players” in brewing, doesn’t really matter whether it’s Miller or Heineken or Inbev.
Still when I invit someone for a beer, I prefer Dreher.
