Vietnamese-Hungarian pop singer Hien Thanh Nguyen (whose name looks about as tough to pronounce correctly as most Hungarian names are to everyone else) recently received her Hungarian citizenship papers, which she proudly shows in the picture to the right. Although born in Budapest, since Hien’s parents were Vietnamese immigrants and not Hungarian citizens, (Hungary’s citizenship laws being more jus sanguinis than jus soli) it took until now for her to get her papers (although this may actually just be another fine example of Hungarian bureaucracy at work). As she told Blikk, this situation added lots of complications to any plans she had to travel outside of Hungary. Hien said she’s very proud of her Hungarian papers, but revealed that her plan once she finishes high school is to go abroad to improve her language skills, or perhaps simply to just get out of here.
