Last week our longtime correspondent J.T. passed us this link to a blog post on the New York Times analyzing a recent report on suicide rates in advanced industrial countries. Apparently referring to South Korea’s “besting” of Hungary as the country in the survey with the highest rate of suicide, J.T. offered the pithy subject line “once again Hungarians lose at even what they’re best at.” To which we would respond: once again Hungary as a nation loses because of the failure of one group of its citizens to keep up.
And as the above chart demonstrates, one group – women – are most definitely not keeping up. Seriously: If Hungarian women were even a third as willing to kill themselves as Hungarian men, Hungary would have simply killed the competition here, thanks to the men’s team unbeatable score of 36.3/100,000, compared to 32.0/100,000 for runner-up (but combined winner) Korea. Good news is that we now can see what’s holding us back, and can have a fresh start for next year.
Well come on, let’s not waste time.
Nominations are now open for Hungarian women who are encouraged to top themselves next year, as a service to the nation. (Politicians excluded from the list because they obviously all should.)
