Motorist Lobby Groups Declare War on Bicycle Lanes
The battle between bicyclists and motorists is set to heat up, as two motorist lobbying groups are planning to take the city to court over the recently designated bicycle lane on Vámház and Múzeum körúts. The motorist lobbying groups say that by creating the bicycle lane on the busy road, the bicycle lobby has taken away much needed space for vehicles either traveling through the area or for those wishing to park their cars. According to them, these bicycle lanes are the cause for traffic congestion in downtown areas, and there is no need for bicycle lanes, as the bicyclists can just as easily move around in the proper traffic lanes, a claim about as plausible as flatulence being the main reason for climate change. When reached for comment, bicycling organizations refused to comment, aside from laughing. [stop.hu]
Whocares. Those 2 wheeled fuckheads will still ride on the sidewalk even if there is a bike lane.
Sad, just sad. Budapest is the least-cycle friendly
city I have ever experienced in Europe - the few
cycle lanes that exist are poorly surfaced and/or
dangerously laid-out. Wouldn't motorists consider
that traffic congestion would be eased if more
people would be encouraged to cycle around!? This
is a systemic problem, and setting up a motorists vs
cyclists battle doesn't resolve it for either.
Welcome to Hungary, the land of problems not
solutions.
Budapest is a cyclists paradise compared to most of UK/Ireland.
Scandanavia still lead the way..
Gov's around the world are, as they should be, trying to discourage mororists from entering city centres to avoid conjection.
Good to see more cycle paths been created, maybe the motorists will stop complaining when they've burned up all the feul.
Sorry Ray, can't agree about Dublin. I've cycled a
lot there too and it's much better. Far from ideal I
know, in many ways, but streets better than
Budapest.
I totally agree with the cycling organisations. Budapest has to be one of the worst and most dangerous places I have ever had the 'pleasure' of cycling around. I quite agree that if people felt that they were not dicing with death to cycle, more people would cycle, thus easing traffic conditions!
