Hungarian Roads Now Officially Unsafe for Foreigners

As we always say, if you’ve got three vaguely-related stories, you’ve got a trend. And especially if they take place within a neatly-defined period of time! So here we go: A trio of spectacular car crashes involving foreigners in Hungary over the past 24 hours. [MTI]

  • Two people were injured when an Italian-plated car ran into another car head-on on the M5 near Lajosmizse in Bács-Kiskun County earlier this morning, while one of the two autos was overtaking a truck. Unexpectedly, the Italians weren’t the ones overtaking.
  • A German couple and two others were injured during a four-car pileup that took place yesterday on Route 65 near Daránypuszta, which we assume is somewhere on the puszta. The crash happened after one of the cars stopped on the road, leading to a free-for-all in which another of the autos flipped over and came to a rest on the other side of the road, where it was hit by yet another car coming in the opposite direction. No word if the whole thing was the Germans’ fault.
  • Finally, tram service along Múzeum körút in central Budapest came to a halt yesterday after a car being driven by a Croatian diplomat crashed into a tram car. Unlike in the other two foreigner crashes, no one was injured. But also unlike the other crashes, in this case the foreigner was clearly to blame, as he had taken an improper turn when crossing the 47 tram’s tracks. But no worries, because unlike all the other drivers involved in the three crashes, the Croatian has diplomatic immunity.

‘Diplomatic’ immunity? That’s a laugh. Immunity from having to drive like a normal person more like. DT plates seem to grant license to drive in bus lanes and along tram tracks and to park absolutely anywhere. What a bunch!! Maybe DT stands for Daft Tw*t! Any other suggestions?

  2. Stan says:

All these unfortunate “accidents” must have been deliberate terrorist acts, orchestrated by Budahazi. We can also blame anything on the Hungarian Guard, MTI will be glad to report it to please their masters.

@Blogger: Don’t quote me on this, but from what I understand a DT-plated car that is parked illegally or otherwise breaking laws does not have immunity from being keyed by passing pedestrians or slammed into by another car with non-DT plates :)
