Posting may be a little light over here for a bit, as we grapple with the weekend’s somewhat surprising – and not 100% believable – announcement by Ferenc Gyurcsány that he will step down as Hungary’s Prime Minister, essentially because he’s figured out that everyone hates him like a crotchful of oozing pus. Bookmark this link if you want to keep up on all the latest twists and turns in this sorry-ass story. Alternatively, don’t bother, and we’ll let you know when he’s safely out the door, and some other knucklehead steps in. [politics.hu]

Wow, ‘Princes Smiles-A-Lot’ steps down after a reign of slow social rot, boredom and a communist agenda.
I would have expected the entire Pestiside community to (albeit with a spoonful of skepticism) erupt into glee…
And here I am, the lone-poster.
I would love to gleeeee
Problem is that the country’s a virtual gonner anyways…no use for extatic enthusiasm…move along…nothing to see…
I think Johnny sums it up nicely. They are just going to replace one shlub with another. There is no talent in either party who will lead Hungary out of the downward spiral which it appears to be in. It would be easy to blame it all on the politicians but ultimately you have to blame the people who put them there. It seems to me, and many of my Hungarian friends agree – or better said that I agree with them, that most in this country are still very backwards thinking, they want a government which is like a parent to a dependent child rather than a mentor there to help you reach your fullest potential. It is also sad to see the growing US parent/child role of government. Government is not the solution to all of lives problems but it is certainly the cause of many.
Absolutely nothing to be happy about. Hungary is running headlong into an Italy-style political arena where no-confidence voting replaces progressive legislation. Fidesz will find their way into office and make a point of undoing any good MSZP accomplished (well, that shouldn’t take too long, natch), because ultimately they don’t care about the country but about having power. But in a country comprised of olympic level whiners perhaps this is the best way to go. Will be interesting to see who actually accepts this thankless post.
As Hungary slides ever faster into the toilet it is worth repeating: it’s the people not the politicians that push the handle.
