We almost hid this Mathaba.net story about far-right leader and law professor (!!) Krisztina Morvai mouthing off about Israel and Gaza over on Politics.hu, turned off the comments and started to cry hysterically into our sólet. But, hey, where's the fun in that? And this paragraph, printed by Israeli daily Haaretz sealed the deal:
Morvai added that she "rejoiced" when she heard of Israeli casualties in Gaza. Addressing Israelis, the Hungarian politician lashed out, saying: "The only way to talk to people like you is by assuming the style of Hamas. I wish all of you lice-infested, dirty murderers will receive Hamas' 'kisses.'"

The problem with Zionism is that it's a failed project, just like the Liberia project was back in Lincoln's time. This is an English language site, primarily designed for expats.
I don't have any problems with foreign born people, or their opinions. What I find offensive is the hate-mongering, their hijacking Hungarian patriotism and their general lack of good will.
The hypocracy of Ricsi, Hotpaprika, etc. had to be pointed out. They should be booted off this site and out of Hungary not because they don't speak the language, nor becuase they are foreign born, but because their behavior is unacceptable. Lets hound them out of here.

Good point. I think what is really happening here is something like that, with a twist.
Jobbik.hu had a English language 'forum' where Ricsi and co. was a major "contributor" and sort of moderator (in charge of the opposite of moderation). I know for a fact that their entire website was downloaded, more than once. Shortly thereafter the forum disappeared. The powers to be at jobbik probably figured out that all their data was subject to subpoenas (either thru normal legal channels or by state security). This would potentially endanger their supporters in the future (by Orban or others).
So they shut down the operation and unleashed Ricsi and his ilk to infest other sites, such as these. This way jobbik distanced itself from its own rhetoric and created plausible denial.
Meanwhile the parasites are getting free publicity on other people's money.

@Gulliver: I think their most inventive creation to date is the new character Will on Politics.hu. A "stereotype New York jew" that finds Stan kind of endearing. Jovially clueless enough to invite Stan and HP to contribute to his education, while he fills in the other gaps with anecdotes about Roma terrorising, stabbing and thieving from people. But he is very understanding of Stan and HP's world views and even sympathises with them. Stan even kind of likes the guy, even though HP and Stan have pretty much him and anyone like him. Meanwhile Farkas László, Ricsi and others have disappeared into the background. And Will's only just strung into life now, just when the heat was on. Classic. Some budding screenplay writer for soap operas has to be working on this one.
The more terrifying alternative is that Will exists and is what/who he says he is.
What I found amusing was how several new people showed up on Politics.hu who are just as spelling challenged as Hotpaprika, as in exactly the same way...

Tünde, you are not the only one with an academic pedigree). My concerns are these: 1. An obsession with the holocaust and denial stories (Will's latest load of stuff he's read about, without naming sources etc...) 2. An obsession with the Roma and various half-baked socio-genetic theories.
Those two alone make me want to trust my instinct more than the evidence. As a logical person I have to accept the evidence, but as just a person I trust my instinct far more.

You also claimed that this man's work was redacted and hushed up. As you know yourself, his life and work as the point of wide and open discussion (obviously heated discussion often) and the subject of films, books, plays etc... Hardly the mystery play you have been painting.
I stand by mistrust for you and your questionable opinions, particularly your unhealthy obsession with these topics.

One of the main problems in Hungary is the trench warfare of opinions. Two opposing sides taking shots at each other, and nothing really happens.
If you walk out to the battlefield with a white flag, and try to talk sense into them, both will start shooting at you. It's just too easy to manipulate people into hate. "Let's kill them krauts, wipe out all the muslims, nuke the japs", and so on.
I don't know if this is genetic or tradition or what, why so many soldiers are willing to give up everything they got, their life, without ever questioning the purpose or the motives. If people would start thinking wars would not be so popular, corrupt politicians, greedy bankers and religious leaders would not be so powerful.
When Morvai takes on the untouchable Israeli government, she shows great courage. The real question is, why would anyone need great courage to criticize the genocidal tendencies of a tiny country. What makes Israel so important and powerful? How can they never do wrong let alone admitting it? What happended to the great nation of Germany, why do they feel the need to forever overcompensate? If Hungary finally have someone who's willing to question the overwhelming and unconditional support for Israel's failing policies, than we should be proud of that.

@Stan just wanted to share this interesting observation about life is to assume that every aspect of life is influenced by the Elite powers, however this does not mean every aspect is controlled by them. In reality to think there is one united power elite that controls everything behind the scenes conflicts with universal law. The Elite use the divide and rule on the spiritualand innocent people in this world, also remember, what you do to others, you have already done to yourself. So the Elite have divided themselves into a number of competitive groups whom compete for ultimate power, so overall they prevent themselves from ever achieving this ultimate control. If good people do nothing the elite will triumph for a time, until it self destructs.
Remember when you focus your thoughts, you will reinforce through the power of your mind. Some people ignore evil, however the power elites influence results from choices made by human beings, so it has to be replaced through positive choices. So you cannot remove the evil entities by ignoring them. However, you can remove evil by knowing enough about there methods and to separate yourself in consciousness, and let the universe remove the evil powers. Know that evil exists and then be nonattached so you don't give it power. If you allow yourself to be controlled by these relative extremes, thinking you have to combat a certain group of elite , then you will only reinforce the consciousness of duality which is the basis and gives energy to maintaining the power elites evil. Sometimes I find living in Hungary frustrating. Not least because I see it becoming more and more like the UK in its ethos. I don't think I can become Hungarian and it would be dishonest/foolish to try. I think that Hungary offers me and family a much better quality of life than we could find elsewhere. As far as I am concerned my children are Hungarian, I wouldn't want them to live anywhere else.

@Sophist: It's only a matter of time. I find these days my first reaction is to over-react and blame other people or look for scapegoats. I moan about things rather than just concentrating on solving the problem. I don't try, because, after all, what's the point? If I do try, I don't try to solve the source of the problem, rather I look for a quick fix and hope someone else will have to clean up the mess. Hunglish isn't an ethnicity, isn't a state of mind - that has nothing to do with language. Minden ellenállás hasztalan.

Anthony D. Smith, "National Identity" offers the following attributes of an ethnicity:
1) A collective proper noun
2) A myth of common ancestry
3) shared historical memories
4) one or more differentiating elements of common culture
5) an association with a specific 'homeland'
6) a sense of solidarity for significant sectors of the population
Under these criteria, "Jews" are most clearly an ethnicity and a different one to Hungarians - different ancestry, culture and homeland. Hungarians and the English are also ethnicities, being British isn't (no common ancestry or homeland, ever weakening solidarity as the UK fragments). As for me "becoming" Hungarian, unlike my children I do not have Hungarian ancestry, homeland, or a common culture (other than simply being European).
It's interesting, Hungary used to be a multi-ethnic, political nation, but has declined into an ethnic nation since 1848. Britain is now following the same road - betrayal of the British Hong Kong Chinese in 1997 being an important milestone.

I found your last comment intriguing; particularly the reference to Szechenyi. I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind expanding on that. Everywhere I've been in Hungary, Szechenyi is seen as a hero. I'd genuinely like to hear your view on this and am not being facetious.
@anon600ad /In Soviet times we were basically just another Gulag concentration camp. We were isolated, brainwashed, lost track of the outside world, our history... We have even lost track of the counterfeit history Horthy & Co. handed down to us after the UK dismembered Hungary and we became part of its informal empire. We have no concept of the wars and revolutions that defined European history including our own. Most Hungarians think the 1956 uprising was uniquely Hungarian, a Hungaricum, when it was the local manifestation of a global revolutionary wave for example, much like the one in 1968 or 1848, Széchenyi's time. He wasn't a patriot just like the revolution wasn't a national revolution. Just like 56 it was part of an international revolutionary wave inspired by Freemasons that Széchenyi got in bed with, just like Károlyi got in bed with the Commies or Horthy with the Brits, or whoever paid him, when another crock of shit hit the fan. The Marxists love Széchenyi, the "Jews" ditto (which should immediately tip you off) and Magyars simply don't understand who he was. They just spout what ever they are primed to. Just like we are primed to some imaginary brotherhood with the Poles (lengyel-magyar barátság) whose nation was born when ours was destroyed. At the same time we are constantly shoved into conflicts with the Germans, Slovaks and Croats who really ARE our brothers and have been for centuries. It's a sad story...

I found your post interesting, since as I said, Szechenyi is just so widely celebrated. What you said about history being lost makes a lot of sense, and in fact, I have often thought about that very idea. I have asked a lot of Hungarians about history, and very few know anything about it. They generally seem to know some surface facts, but aren't really able to give much in the way of analysis. This is especially true of the communist period. I have also though something similar to you about the 1848 revolution being part of a larger phenomenon sweeping across Europe at the time. I had also thought about the relationship between Hungary and Poland, and about how deep the feelings of solidarity went. ie: was it really a sense of brotherhood, or more of having a common enemy?
Hungary's story is sad, no question. What also makes me sad is that (at least to me) it seems that the people are so disconnected from their real heritage. It is a little like so many 'future regression' movies, where post-nuclear war, lost people wander through the ruins of great cities...somehow like although Hungarians still live among the castles and the monuments, very little of it has a deep sense of personal significance.
I hope that somehow, Hungarians can reconnect with this, and I guess that's why I am not critical of the idea of re-establishing the monarchy. How to go about that though is perhaps not so easy.
(Once again, this post is not written in a judgmental or condescending tone, but more of interest and reflection.)

We lost or lost control of almost all of our territory and natural resources, of course, but we have also lost things a lot less tangible. A couple of years ago someone gave me an anthology of 20th century Hungarian art for my birthday and looking at the table of contents I noticed that not one of our great artists was born or created anything significant after 1945, as if our creativity would have been killed that year. After the baby boom years (another global phenomenon) our birthrates started to fall too drastically despite the Commie's ban on abortion and by 1968 we had basically become a nation of zombies evidenced by, among other things, our complete lack of reaction to 1968's events. "lost people wander through the ruins of great cities…" Until the mutants get them? Which is exactly how I see my people.
