Hungarian Tourist Board Reclaims Slovakia

hungarian-tourist-board-reclaims-slovakia.jpg

Thanks to the latest goofy tourism promotion by Magyar Turizmus, Hungary is not only officially the land of 80s ‘tards, so is Slovakia, since according to the poster above, we’re about to reclaim the Hungarian Highlands (Felvidék) for the Magyar Motherland. Going through the various new tourism posters for Hungary, we came across the one you can see above. If you look at the image, it seems fairly innocuous enough, with what appears to be a father and son looking over Hungary, and a random assortment of landmarks beneath them. But look just a bit closer and you’ll notice what is unmistakably the Esztergom Basilica which resides on the right bank of the Danube. And that’s where things get a bit awkward.

Ever since the Allies redrew Hungary’s borders in 1920, the Danube became an international frontier until where it meets the Ipoly river at the start of the Danube bend, meaning that the left bank (north of the river) became Slovakia, so that in the image above, the kid has already laid his hands on the (once again) Hungarian Highlands, just as Dad prepares to make it official by placing the Hungarian tricolor over there. Jan Slota is already in a plane, since those giant crosses have obviously proven ineffectual.

“the Danube became an international frontier, meaning that the left bank became Slovakia”

Well, that is true up to Szob from where it is the beautiful area in Hungary called Börzsöny.

But yes, the bit shown looks like it’s not modern-day Hungary.

Vándorló, I clarified that bit now.
