Motorway Marble Misshap Captured in Glorious Technicolor

Fans of high-quality accident photography will appreciate this Index.hu gallery of the truck that spilt its payload of small plastic balls from a District XIV overpass above the M3 motorway yesterday. The Czech driver's balls-up blocked both the overpass and the highway below.
Is this index.hu the biggest (or the only) online media in Hungary? You rely on it a lot.
Well, no, it's not the only one, but it is certainly the biggest, best and most reliable - that's why we rely on it.
Not only do they actually research stories for themselves, dig into scandals and report with humour and integrity, they have embraced the Internet by building up a network of blogs and other sites around the main portal. In addition to all the original content, they embed links in their stories, post galleries and videos and link to blogs, only some of which are their own. With the possible exception of T-Online's Origo, the competition is light years behind.
Significantly, Index is also generally accepted as being neither left nor right, which is rare in Hungarian journalism (although I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with this statement). You hear Hungarians on the street saying: "Did you see that on Index," all the time, whereas people are pretty coy about which print newspaper they read, unless they want to get into a long political argument.
While in more "developed" countries newspapers have grudgingly adapted to the Internet, Index is a website that has taken on and beaten the country's newspapers at their own game.
They also have photographers on the scene at every teen fashion show and minor road accident. There's no competition, although Blikk runs it close for "The Dog Bit My Cock" human interest stories.
