Breaking: Guy Under the Guy Under the Prime Minister is Gay!
It's taken a while - 1,111 years, actually - but for the first time a senior member of the Hungarian government has willingly "outed" himself as being gay. As our brother/sister site Caboodle.hu reports, Gábor Szetey (below, right) came out while opening this week's 12th annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Film and Cultural Festival with a nice speech including this:
My name is Gábor Szetey. I am the personnel state secretary of the government of the Republic of Hungary. I believe in God, love, freedom and equality. I am Hungarian and European. I am an economist and a personnel leader. I am a partner, a friend, sometimes an opponent. And I am gay.
Szetey: Gay

Truth be told, we knew that something along these lines was brewing, thanks to reader S.M. (no, not that SM), who wrote us saying that a "VIP" was going to come out during the kick-off of the LGBTFCF. And everyone in town with even half-way functioning "gaydar" knew that Szetey wasn't your average personnel state secretary. (His page on the government's website says he was an "Associate of Occupational Studies" at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York back in 1997-'99, if that's not enough of a clue.) Still: wacka, wacka, wacka!
While in most other EU countries this wouldn't be much of a big deal, Szetey's is not only the most high-profile de-closetings in Hungarian government history, but pretty much the biggest gay-day since the Magyar hordes rolled into the Carpathian Basin.
So congrats, Gábor, and we hope to see you marching with pride in this weekend's Pride Parade, because being gay is nothing to be ashamed of. Now, as for being a Hungarian politician...
This is good stuff. I was at the Gay Pride parade in Toronto over a week ago and I thought Hungary should have one just as great. Budapest can show the other East European capitals how to party.
Well, Jobbik is organizing the egg-throwers and HVIM is joining forces with your local football-hooligans from Fradi and Kispest to attack the Parade, at least if one should believe the talk on the streets. These "anti-communists" can not just stop to admire Putin's Russia. They would welcome more a Moscow-type of Parade.
So maybe a shield borrowed from the Magyar hordes is a better protection than an umbrella in the week-end...
The more people come out, the more the general populace will suddenly discover how many people they know, respect, and love are gay. And each one coming out will help bring more out.
It is so important for gay people to come out, because the 'closet' is one of the most significant tricks the bigots have ever used against gay people.
Ultimately many of the haters will come out also. The right wing churches game has always been to make being gay so terrible that people are terrified into the closet, they end up hating themselves, but in one of the normal twists of human personality, since they don't dare come out, they express their self hatred as hatred for others like them.
It's as simple as that............ Of course it is also just plain terrible - the espousing by religious groups of hatred, driven by fear, just so they can sell their superstitions to the unquestioning public.
I'm pretty depressed about the anti-gay protesters. There's always been a bit of bunko machismo in Hungary, but in my seven-plus years here, I've actually been quite impressed at how rarely the homophobes gang up on gay people. Seems like in some countries in the region, a place like the Kiraly baths just couldn't exist because there would be gay-bashers outside every day. Yet in Budapest, as repressed as people may be in some instances, gays have pretty much been left alone.
Now that gay-bashers in Moscow, Warsaw, and elsewhere have made big news, the Nazi contingent here in BP decides to try and flex its muscle. Why wasn't every egg-thrower arrested? Isn't that assault? Do these people really need protection? C'mon Budapest, I know you're not swinging San Francisco, but when you let the bunkos take over, even just a little bit, you become nothing but a bunko yourself. Sad.
Vadasz,
That was my thought. Taking for granted the homo demo was legal (it was or the marchers would not have been granted permission) the right-wing nut jobs should be locked up double quick for harassment/assault. Now I know that 8 of them were, but (esp. after attending one march about 3 years ago when there were more police with dogs, horses, armoured cars etc. than marchers)you gotta wonder who the police are actually there to protect. The marchers from the public or the public from the marchers? Or are they just there to support the neo-facist flag-waving crazies?
Hearing the reports from the "battlefield" the Police allowed/encouraged throwing of eggs, so one can ask who the Police was out to protect.
The organizers of the protesters (Jobbik) was disappointed that the hard-core attackers (mainly hard-core football hooligans) chickened out and did not really attack the Parade as planned. Now they resorted to just throwing beer-bottles at the Police. Maybe these hard-core guys have a problem with their sexuality?
Lately a new group of hard-core fighters have been formed by some of the hard-core hooligans from Fradi and Kispest. They are supposed to create problems at non-football events, like political meetings. The planned attack on the Parade was suppose to be their exam.
So why is Jobbik doing this? The simple answer is to make problems for Fidesz/KDNP and take members from Fidesz/KDNP by exposing the Jews, Gypsies and Gays inside Fidesz/KDNP. By forcing Fidesz/KDNP to make statements that are against violence against Jews, Gypsies and Gays, Jobbik makes it easier for the Fidesz/KDNP-supporters that hate Jews, Gypsies and Gays to support Jobbik instead. That is why we will see more of these high-profile attacks in the future.
OK folks, if i have to listen to people revealing themselves about being gay (excuse the hell out of me, but who gives a shit), then for the record, i want all of you to know that i'm straight. anybody's got a problem with that? thought not. at least nobody better because soon i'll be a minority.
seriously - WHO cares what people do in the privacy of their own (or somebody else's) home. why am i constantly bombarded by these revelations? soon i'll be organizing menstruating women's marches (well, just everybody in the city must know and tolerate us!!) y'know what i mean? just go away or party or do whatever blows smoke up your pants or skirt and leave the rest of us alone.
Well Klara, what is your stance on equal rights for gays and lesbians? Because that is what it is about.
Okay, Klara.
Let's assume everyone in the world is gay - the way it is assumed everyone is straight.
How long will it take you to publicly state that you are straight?
Or will you just let everyone assume you're a dyke!
Joe - for all I care they can assume I'm a martian and am unisex. I'm assuming others are about as interested in my preference as I am about theirs.
Viking - if you read what I wrote in context you will understand what I've said. As for the world being silent? Are you saying there is nothing else to talk about? Are you Hungarian? :)
Klara,
The context was that a minister came out and stated he was Gay and that a Gay-Rights demo was attacked by bigots. In that context you claim "i'm straight" using a debate technique throwing mud at the others in the debate stating 'you are not straight = you are all sodomites'. Your claim "because soon i'll be a minority" strengthens your argument that all others are sodomites.
I still do not understand what you mean with "exercise my right of not wishing to know". Does that not imply that other people should shut up? If so, who are you to tell other people what they should speak about? If you do not want to listen, then you 'vote with your feet'. I do that every day.
If you check my other posts on PestiSide and Caboodle you will see that there are a lot of other things to talk about.
Klara,
also, in a world dominated by heterosexuality, straight people express their sexuality every day, and in a far less polite manner than in a speech at a rally aimed directly at a like-minded audience.
On movies, on tv, in adverts of all stripes, on the 4-6 tram, walking hand-in-hand down the street, lying on top of each other at the park, dancing in discos. Everywhere one goes (especially in a city like Budapest), straight people are kissing, hugging, fondling each other in public. I'd call that a pretty loud and obvious declaration of their sexuality. Do you have a problem with that?
If gays were to remain verbally silent about their sexual preference, would you accord them the same right to public displays of affection that most people grant to straights?

Joe - for all I care they can assume I'm a martian and am unisex. I'm assuming others are about as interested in my preference as I am about theirs."
But there is a difference that you cannot or refuse to see.
In some places, gay people are killed for *being* gay. No one is killed for being heterosexual.
Gay people are discriminated against. When was the last time you lost your job because you were heterosexual?
Gay people sometimes lose their job because they are gay. When was the last time you lost your job because you are heterosexual?
Can you answer any of these questions, Isadora or Klara, or whoever you are?
Joe: Actually, in some place people *are* killed for being heterosexual: If they are a woman and don't hide this sexuality by wearing a bag on their head, etc. As bad as things may be for same-sexers in places like Hungary, it's still a walk in the park compared to just normal fucking life in a lot of other places I've seen. Still, wish I had been there for the Pride parade; I'm not gay (that I know of) but would have definately been smooching any dude within reach just to rile up the killjoys.
Erik - Thanks! Finally I understand what Klara meant with "unisex" = simple that we all are wearing a Burka.
Burka refers to a 'cloak like pleated garment that covers the body from head to foot, fitting closely over the head and face with a mesh area in front of the eyes'. Perfect - who can tell the gender from that? We all look alike and we do not need to feel intimidated by 2 'burkas' fondling with each-other, who will know if they are 'straight' or not? And in this heat and big UV-radiation a white Burka is recommended.
WikiPedia gave the following explanation for "martian" = "As an adjective, the term Martian is used to describe anything pertaining to the planet Mars, ... , but scientists no longer consider it likely that Mars has ever had intelligent life".
Joe you say there are some places people are being killed, refused jobs....because they are gay? not that it is acceptable, but my point is WHY does anybody need to know that they are gay??? nuff said about this topic as far as i'm concerned.
let up gentle people it is too hot to be making ourselves or each other even hotter for no good reason. how 'bout a cold beer?
Erik i still hold that osama bin laden makes his getaways in a burka?
Klara, in a perfect world, nobody needs to know anyone's sexual preference. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. ---------------------------------
Érted?
---------
This has all got too complicated!
The issue is not whether anyone should be *forced* to reveal their sexual preferences, but whether they *can* do so if they wish (for example, by holding hands in the street) without fear of verbal or other abuse.
As Vadasz says, heterosexuals can do this. Those who think it should be OK for heterosexuals but not for homosexuals are in the same boat as the jobbik people.
Tim
Klara, to use ur own sick phrase: who's giving a shit (about ur heterosexuality)?
Being gay is a fact of life, and as the rightwinged religions are not only killing homosexuals, they are preventing them to have equal rights, that heterosexuals (like you) enjoy, and regard as normal!
OUT with the religions, in with the Gays!
Equality for all!
It's enough to make any independent thinking person (gay or straight)go buttfuck a wall. Why, in 2008, should anyone be prevented from (or harassed for) expressing their sexual preferences? Medieval style religious bigotry and sexually-repressed white-boy nationalism is about 99% of the answer. Fuck em all. Especially the skinhead, uniform-loving-little gayboy Garda types. Bet they'd love a bit of it.
