Midweek Briefing: Should've-Known-Better Special
Your mother warned you about this week's mid-week briefing, but did you listen? Here comes the usual assortment of mishaps, accidents and other fuck-ups that could so easily have been avoided. Watch and learn:
• A veteran burglar fell asleep on the job and was found by police under the shelves in a store that he had tried to rob in Mályi (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County) recently. He and two accomplices had broken into a store and didn't know that a "silent alarm" had notified the authorities. When police arrived, they caught two men and found the third after they heard snoring noises. The man wasn't surprised or worried when he was woken up by officers, as he had spent half of his life in prison for theft and burglary. [hirszerzo.hu]
• An 18-year-old man fell off a train traveling from Szombathely to Székesfehérvár and died immediately Thursday morning. The circumstances of the accident are unclear, but according to eyewitnesses, the train left the station with closed doors, and when it was out of the station, the young man was seen standing on the stairs on the outside of the train. He was reportedly warned by many people that he would fall, but he just didn't listen. [hirszerzo.hu]
• A young man drowned in the Csele Creek on Sunday while trying to save his friend. Three twenty-year-old men were bathing near Mohács where the creek runs into the the River Danube Sunday afternoon when one of them started struggling. His two friends immediately rushed to save him, and while one of them managed to pull him to the shore, the other drowned. The man's body was found by divers in the evening. Locals say that area of the creek is particularly dangerous, as it is full of currents. A young child recently drowned at the same spot, and according to legends, Louis II (1506-1526), king of Hungary and Bohemia, also succumbed to the same creek after the calamitous battle of Mohács. • A valuable artifact was cast aside by construction workers during renovations of the Miskolc-Tapolca cave baths. A so-called szárkő, a 50kg piece of door frame carved from stone in the 15th century, was found by a sharp-eyed local man among the rubble. [hirado.hu]
• Fines totaling Ft 465,000 (€1,900) were imposed on 72 drivers during a speeding crackdown on the M7 motorway on Tuesday. The owner of a BMW was driving at 235 km/h. In related news, a driver broke the speeding record in Fejér County on the weekend. He was driving at 124 km/h in Felsőkörtvélyes, where the speed limit is 50. [vezess.hu, orientpress.hu]
• Nearly fifty people attacked police officers and threw chairs and beer bottles at them in the town of Heves on Sunday. The officers had asked for identification from a group of 15 people in the town's marketplace, but the group refused to co-operate. Soon, the group was joined by others and grew to fifty people. Officers fired a warning shot, before arresting six people. They are looking for a seventh accused of physical assault against an officer. [hvg.hu]
• A pony caused an accident on Route 68 in Somogy County on Monday. The animal jumped in front of a car and the driver couldn't stop. The windshield broke. The pony fled the scene, so its condition is not known. [radio.hu]
• A mountain bike worth Ft 1.5 million (€6,000) was stolen from an unlocked garage in Nyíregyháza on Saturday. The bike is a black and green Giant Glory. Police are asking anyone with any information to call 06-42-524-600/ext. 3088 or 3095. [radio.hu]
