Pozsony Tourists Locked Up for Offering Unofficial History Lesson
Even referring to Bratislava as "Pozsony" will incite a shower of insults from your average Slovak - and talking history is a definite no-no. If stories this side of the controversial border are to be believed, that is the only transgression three tourist group members were guilty of this weekend in Pozsony. They were nabbed outside the Szent Márton cathedral, in which many Hungarian kings were crowned, for guiding without official permits. A reportedly very rude and insulting official in a leather jacket asked them for the official papers, before summoning the fuzz to cart them off to their cells with sirens blazing.
One of the three men detained, Hungarian history teacher (no doubt both a history teacher from Hungary and a teacher of Magyar history) János Varga from Győr was locked up for nine hours, at least if you trust Blikk's version of history, before the local consulate stepped in. The incident has caused outrage here in Hungary – so don't think you've heard the last of it.
