Remainder Bin (III): Police Bust Poisonous Pig Cheese Peddlers
The Hungarian health authorities have uncovered a conspiracy involving a shipment of salmonella-infected disznósajt (pork cheese) that was off-loaded to unwitting consumers in several towns in and around Pest county. According to Origo.hu, for Ft 5 million (€20,000) and a promise he wouldn't be fired from his job, one Zsigmond Zsolt R. agreed to take responsibility for the poisonous pork-by-product-product, which even when not infected with salmonella is known to cause nausea and other unpleasant symptoms among those who consume it.
The disznósajt in question was sold by Olcsó Hús Kft (Cheap Meat Kft) on May 4th, and caused at least seven people to get ill. After the stuff was revealed to be toxic, the company's managing director, István T. had a private investigation firm question his employees, looking for one who could be held responsible for the incident. Mr. T. told the investigators that Mr. R. had told him that he had bought the bad meat from an unknown man at the Lehel tér market for a "favorable price." But when R. was questioned by the authorities, he fouled up his story, and finally admitted that he had taken the rap for the bad meat, so that Olcsó Hús wouldn't get slaughtered. The police are now investigating the matter.
