Blogger Gets Clobbered at Anti-Racist Demo

About 500 people held an anti-racist demonstration yesterday at Moszkva tér, where a week ago a Roma teenager was stabbed in a freak sword attack by a half-dozen nutters dressed in World War I and WWII military uniforms. Initiated by something called the Hungarian Resistance and Anti-Fascist Alliance, the rally was non-partisan, according to a report on Index.hu. Members of the right-wing Hungarian Democratic Forum and the Hungarian Socialist Party spoke, as well as the leaders of various Roma organizations and the victim's mother, who said "Roma and non-Roma, politicians and ordinary citizens are equally present here." Also present was notorious local provocateur Tamás Polgár - a.k.a. Tomcat - who quickly discovered that the crowd was not particularly enamored of his brand of wacky street theater.

Apparently, Tomcat showed up at the rally wearing a T-shirt saying "I Support the Worldwide Jewish Plot," and was seen giving a Nazi salute, after which he was knocked down by one of the demonstrators and had to be "rescued" by the police. Ironically, the police earlier had to rescue Hungary's most notorious neo-Nazi from Tomcat, when he confronted her with a giant purple dildo at another rally two months ago.

"I wanted to express my support," Tomcat said while being escorted to a waiting police car. "I'm sorry for that boy. But because of my clothes, they thought I was against them." He later sent a letter to Index claiming someone in the crowd wanted to stab him.

If so, it's hard not to understand why. According to Index, Tomcat had earlier made the following comment on his blog about the stabbing: "All that happened, in my opinion, is that one lousy Gypsy kid stabbed another, then they got scared and agreed between each other to come up with a tale about wicked skinheads, because it would have been awkward to explain the police what the bone of contention was - that is, that they have been out stealing."
