Hollywood Hungarian in Casting Call for Commie Monsters
From our recently-opened Hollywood bureau we get word of an interesting email making the rounds both in the US and here in Hungary. It's written by one Klaudia Kovacs, a Los Angeles-based actress/journalist/producer who is currently working on an ostensibly quite serious documentary about the 1956 revolution, one that is apparently getting support from a cast of Hollywood and Hungarian dignitaries stretching from President Ferenc Mádl to Tony Curtis. (That's Kovacs at left, looking, er, thought-provoking.) Aside from the fact that it is in Hungarian, the email is almost identical to the sorts of chipper notes American casting directors send out when looking for people to stick in their film. Well, that and one other minor difference: Instead of cute brunettes or handsome leading men, Kovacs is on the hunt for people who committed atrocities during Hungary's darkest days of Stalinism, and are willing to go on camera and talk about it.
Klaudia's cattle call for commie butchers, after the jump...
Dear Friends, Colleagues and Acquaintances:I would like to ask for your help for our documentary entitled "Torn from the Flag."
We are especially looking for people and their contact information who:
* worked for AVO/AVH until 1956. (It doesn't really matter to us what their position was.) Although we would prefer female torturers, as well as interrogators and executioners.
* were Communists before 1989 AND still are today.Thank you in advance for your time.
Sincerely,
Klaudia Kovacs
Having never had the gift of tact ourselves, it's hard for us to fault Kovacs for being this direct. But does she really think that it's possible to find, for example, a "female torturer" from 1956 by sending out emails to one's friends? Because unless she is making a documentary saying that the interrogations, torture and executions of 1956 were good, it seems unlikely that she or anyone on her email list, or anyone on those persons' email lists, is going to know anyone who worked for the AVO (the Stalinist-era secret service) or who is otherwise guilty of interrogating, torturing or executing Hungarian freedom fighters in the period surrounding the uprising.
Still, kudos for trying. So if anyone out there knows of any unapologetic commie interrogators, torturers or executioners from way back, be sure to drop Klaudia a line at klaudiainc@hotmail.com. And while you're at it, drop us one, too, because we might want to take a crack at them ourselves.
