Olympic Dopers Win Second Gold for Chutzpa
Well, at least now we can say we've finally heard it all. After finally agreeing in late autumn to surrender the gold medals they had been stripped of by the International Olympic Committee, disgraced Olympians Adrián Annus and Róbert Fazekas stood on a stage in the town on Szombathely last weekend and received oversized replicas of the awards they were forced to give back. According to various news reports, the medals, which are made of gold-plated silver, cost something north of Ft 500,000 (€2,000) and were paid for by the dopers' dopy fans. One side of each medal has an inscribed reference to "golden justice," while the other features an image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, looking peeved, apparently a reference to the supposed injustice of the situation. We don't doubt old Nike is irked, though for an altogether different reason.
The medals were presented by one István Sulykos, a fan of the poor sportsmen who earlier won his own bit of notoriety by going on a hunger strike during the dopers' "ordeal." Apparently the event was initiated by the World Federation of Hungarians, the right-wing nationalist group considered largely responsible for the failed Dec. 6 referendum on dual citizenship.
As with the referendum, the awards show didn't seem to work out exactly the way the WFH probably planned it, as Annus took advantage of the event to announce that he is joining the local branch of the hated Socialist Party in the western village of Ják.
Meanwhile, Fazekas told reporters that he was planning on visiting a psychiatrist to prepare for future urine tests, and will attend such test with a lawyer at his side. Sounds like a good plan, though if he plans on doing what he did last time before his next drug screening, he may also want to bring along a proctologist as well.
